It’s nice to read some news we Muricans can be proud of and I say Chief Saavedra
rocks
.

Unrelated to anything much, her unusual last name reminded me of the name “Saavedro”, which was the name of Brad Dourif’s character in one of the Myst games.

In my defense, Brad Dourif put in one his better creepy psycho acts in that one. Not that “creepy psycho” is outside his wheelhouse, but you don’t feel
sorry for
Wormtongue in the Lord of the Rings, for example. Nor Chucky, really.

1st woman enlists as chief culinary specialists. The jokes, they write themselves.

As I understand it, cooks on subs are designated and trained as chefs . Best eating anywhere in the Navy.
Chief
is a reference to her
rank
, pay grade E-7, chief petty officer. Making chief is an accomplishment in its own right. This woman could wind up cooking for the president some day.

I’m sure it’s a great achievement, more than I’ve ever done, it’s just kinda funny that the 1st woman on board is in the kitchen.

I hear ya’. As a chief, she’ll probably be running the mess for the boat. So yes, in the kitchen, but it’s a pretty exclusive one.

Ok I read it, 20% of the crew is female on this float. This makes more sense, so they are obviously hot bunking with other females. For those who don’t know, they sleep in racks and people use the bed before and after you, hence hot bunking. There are usually three watches. I was a Marine but I had some interest in the silent service. If they have their own female quarters I don’t see what it matters. The sub fleet is highly selective and I don’t think you would find much of a problem with such highly scrutinized sailors.

It would take a particular sort of person to serve in subs.

Yeah for sure, but they are so big these days. I went on an LA class and that wasn’t bad. I can only imagine a boomer, they jog around in them.
